Bruno Giacosa’s Barolo Falletto 2012 is an outstanding expression of Nebbiolo, the signature red grape of Piedmont. This vintage is crafted from select parcels within the revered Falletto vineyard, situated in Serralunga d’Alba. The 2012 growing season saw a cool spring followed by a warm, dry summer, which allowed for an elegant, balanced ripening of the grapes. In the cellar, Giacosa maintains traditional practices, with extended maceration on the skins and long ageing in large Slavonian oak casks to preserve authenticity and develop structure. The result is a wine that marries grace and power, offering aromas of dried rose, cherry, tar, and delicate savoury notes, underpinned by an assertive yet refined tannic framework, and a long, persistent finish.
Barolo hails from the Langhe hills in Piedmont, in northwestern Italy, a region steeped in viticultural history. The calcareous-clay soils and the complex topography of the area, together with a continental climate marked by foggy autumns and cold winters, provide Nebbiolo with the unique conditions required to reach its expressive peak. The DOCG status of Barolo is a testament to its global prestige and the region’s centuries-old commitment to quality winemaking. The Falletto vineyard, in particular, is renowned for producing long-lived wines with recognisable depth, aromatic complexity, and a distinctive mineral backbone.
Given its noble stature and formidable structure, this Barolo pairs beautifully with classic Piedmontese fare such as brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin with truffle, or rich risottos with porcini mushrooms. Its tannins and acidity also lend themselves to aged cheeses and game like venison or pheasant.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine at least one hour prior to serving and present it at a temperature of 16-18°C. This allows the intricate bouquet and layered palate to unfurl fully, making for an unforgettable tasting experience. With proper cellaring, the 2012 vintage will continue to evolve, offering rewards to those patient enough to wait.
