Viniou Reviews

Borgogno's Barolo DOCG Riserva 2014 is a quintessential expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape that is the hallmark of the Barolo appellation. This cuvée is crafted from carefully selected grapes sourced from some of the region’s most esteemed vineyards, and represents the tradition of extended ageing that sets Riserva bottlings apart. 2014 was a vintage marked by challenging weather—cooler and wetter than average—but thanks to meticulous vineyard management, the resulting wines are elegant and aromatically defined. The wine presents an alluring bouquet of rose petals, tar, dried cherries, and hints of truffle, while the palate reveals refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and layers of balsamic, earthy complexity from its prolonged maturation in large Slavonian oak. Borgogno’s signature precision is evident, offering a Barolo of both depth and finesse, promising graceful evolution over many years.

The Barolo region lies within the rolling hills of the Langhe, in southern Piedmont. This area benefits from a continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature shifts that favour the slow, complete ripening of Nebbiolo. Clay-limestone soils, interspersed with veins of sand and marl, impart both power and perfume to the wines. Historically, Barolo has been heralded as the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings,” with a lineage dating back to the 19th century Savoy court. Producers like Borgogno have long upheld the heritage of traditional winemaking, allowing the nuanced interplay of terroir and grape to shine through in each bottle.

For food pairings, Barolo Riserva thrives alongside rich, savoury dishes. Classic local companions include brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), wild boar ragù over tajarin pasta, or porcini mushroom risotto. Aged cheeses such as Castelmagno or Parmigiano Reggiano will underscore the wine’s structure and aromatics. For adventurous pairings, consider truffle-based dishes or game meats. To best appreciate its complexity, decant at least two hours before serving, and present at a temperature of 18°C. This will allow the wine’s bouquet to blossom and its tannins to soften, ensuring a harmonious and memorable tasting experience.
