Viniou Reviews

Borgogno Barolo DOC Riserva 2016 is a remarkable expression of Nebbiolo, the quintessential grape variety of the Barolo region. The 2016 vintage is widely acclaimed for its finesse and superb ageing potential, thanks to a growing season marked by a cool spring and a warm, even-ripening summer. This Riserva cuvée undergoes lengthy maceration on skins and traditional ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, resulting in an intensely structured wine with deep garnet hues. On the nose, it reveals an intricate bouquet of rose petals, tar, red cherry, tobacco, dried herbs, and a hint of truffle, while the palate is firm yet silky, with pronounced tannins and a lingering, savoury finish.

Barolo lies at the heart of the Langhe hills in Piedmont, northern Italy, an area renowned for producing some of the world’s most aristocratic reds. Vineyards are typically planted on calcareous clay and marl soils, which impart structure and complexity to the wines. The hilly terrain and the region’s cool continental climate, tempered by influences from the Alps, ensure slow, even ripening and allow Nebbiolo to develop its trademark aromatic intensity and depth. Barolo’s historical importance is underscored by its near-mythical status among wine lovers, with Borgogno being one of its most traditional and prestigious houses, established in the 18th century.

To complement Barolo’s grandeur and tannic power, serve with dishes rich in flavour and texture. Classic Piedmontese pairings include braised beef cheek, wild boar ragù, or the famed vitello tonnato. Risotto with porcini mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes, or mature cheeses such as Castelmagno also work beautifully, allowing the wine’s aromatic complexity to shine.

For optimal enjoyment, decant this Barolo Riserva well ahead of serving to allow the bouquet to open up. Serve at 17-18°C in large-bowled glasses; this temperature brings out the wine’s nuanced aromatics and softens the tannins, ensuring an elegant, memorable tasting experience.
