Roagna’s Barbaresco Pajé 2014 is a brilliant expression of Nebbiolo from one of Piedmont’s most revered traditionalists. Crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo, the wine hails from the famed Pajé vineyard—a terroir noted for its calcareous-marl soils which are particularly conducive to Nebbiolo’s elegance and finesse. The 2014 vintage in Piedmont was characterised by a mild and wet summer, followed by optimal weather in September and October, allowing for slow, balanced ripening and yielding wines of remarkable aromatics and freshness. Roagna adheres to long macerations and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing the wine to fully express its purity and the unique nuances of its site. In the glass, expect ethereal notes of rose petal, cherry, orange zest, dried herbs, earthy undertones, and a touch of tar. The palate is both structured and graceful, with ripe yet firm tannins and a vibrant, lingering finish.
Barbaresco hails from the hills of Piedmont, specifically the Langhe area, a region with a long and distinguished viticultural history. The climate is continental, with warm summers, cold winters, and notable diurnal temperature shifts that help preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the grapes. The soils here, particularly in the Pajé cru, are a mix of clay, limestone and marl, contributing to the elegance and aromatic precision of Nebbiolo. The relatively small appellation of Barbaresco was officially designated in 1966 and has since been noted for producing more accessible, yet still complex and age-worthy, wines compared to neighbouring Barolo.
This Barbaresco shines with traditional Piemontese dishes such as tajarin al tartufo (fresh egg pasta with white truffle), brasato al Barbaresco (beef braised in Barbaresco wine), and agnolotti del plin (stuffed pasta with roast meats). Its refined tannins and freshness also make it an excellent companion to roast game, alpine cheeses like Castelmagno, and earthy mushroom dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow the aromas to fully unfold. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This will reveal the full spectrum of its elegance and subtle power, making it a true joy for Nebbiolo enthusiasts and lovers of fine Italian wines.
