The 2014 Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva by Produttori del Barbaresco is a distinguished red wine crafted exclusively from the Nebbiolo grape, the noble variety of Piedmont. As a cuvée from the renowned Rabajà vineyard, this wine captures the essence of one of the most celebrated crus in Barbaresco. The 2014 vintage was shaped by a challenging growing season, marked by a cool and wet summer, but the late-season sunshine allowed Nebbiolo to ripen slowly, resulting in wines of finesse and vibrant acidity. Traditional vinification methods are used, with extended maceration and maturation in large oak casks, which respect the grape’s character while providing structure and subtle complexity.
Barbaresco hails from the rolling hills of Piedmont, in north-western Italy. This region is famed for its limestone-rich marl soils and the influence of the Tanaro River, which together foster the development of Nebbiolo’s unique perfume and elegant tannins. The continental climate, with marked seasonal temperature shifts, contributes to the slow, even ripening of the grapes, intensifying aromas and freshness. Barbaresco DOCG has established itself as the more refined cousin of Barolo, known for its approachability in youth and its aromatic complexity, yet it remains capable of graceful ageing.
This Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva will shine alongside classic Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin al tartufo (egg pasta with truffles), brasato al Barbaresco (beef braised in Barbaresco wine), or a rich mushroom risotto. Outside the regional repertoire, try it with roast lamb, aged Parmigiano Reggiano, or duck breast with a cherry sauce—the wine’s aromatic intensity and taut structure will complement earthy and savoury flavours beautifully.
For the best tasting experience, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its bouquet of rose, tar, red berries and subtle spice to express itself fully. Serve at 16-18°C. This will allow the tannins to soften and the intricate flavours to unfurl elegantly on the palate.
