The Guidalberto 2021 from Tenuta San Guido is a Tuscan red blend that beautifully embodies the estate’s innovative spirit. Predominantly crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this cuvée is designed to be more approachable in its youth than its illustrious sibling, Sassicaia, but it nevertheless reflects careful selection of grapes and precise vinification. The 2021 vintage benefited from a temperate growing season, granting the wine an expressive aromatic profile and balanced structure. Expect deep ruby colouring, with aromas of ripe black cherry, cassis, and plum, interwoven with subtle notes of tobacco, herbs, and cedar. On the palate, it reveals a supple texture, fine-grained tannins, and a lingering, spicy finish—testament to its maturation in French and American oak barrels.
Tenuta San Guido is located on the coastal area of Tuscany known as the Maremma, a region that has become synonymous with the so-called Super Tuscan movement. Once a marshland, it is now famed for its excellent drainage and stony, mineral-rich soils, particularly conducive to Bordeaux varietals. The Mediterranean climate, with its ample sunshine and cooling sea breezes, ensures steady ripening while retaining freshness and aromatic complexity. This unique terroir, combined with a winemaking philosophy inspired by both tradition and innovation, gives rise to wines of remarkable elegance and longevity.
The Guidalberto’s plush fruit and savoury depth make it an excellent partner for Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), wild boar ragù on pappardelle, or aged pecorino cheese. It also pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled vegetables, or classic dishes such as osso buco.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at a temperature of 16-18°C. Decanting for about an hour will allow the aromas to open up further. Guidalberto is drinking beautifully in its youth, but has the structure to evolve gracefully for several more years, rewarding a little patience in the cellar.
