Col Orcia’s 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is a compelling showcase of Sangiovese Grosso, the noble grape at the heart of this prestigious appellation. The 2020 vintage was marked by a classic growing season, allowing for optimal ripening and balanced acidity. Col Orcia, renowned for its organic practices, brings out a purity and vibrancy in this wine, emphasising the character of both grape and terroir. The vinification process typically involves long maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks, nurturing structure and finesse whilst maintaining the grape’s fragrant profile. In the glass, expect a deep ruby hue, aromas of ripe red cherries, wild berries, dried herbs, and hints of leather and sweet spice, underpinned by a fine tannic backbone and a persistent, savoury finish.
The region of Montalcino is situated in the heart of Tuscany, benefiting from its distinct microclimate. The hillside vineyards, set at 300-400 metres altitude, experience significant diurnal temperature shifts, which preserve acidity and develop aromatic complexity in the fruit. The soils, a mix of clay, marl, and limestone, impart structure and minerality to the wines. Montalcino has a rich viticultural heritage, with Brunello earning DOCG status in 1980, and its wines have since gained worldwide acclaim for their elegance and ageing potential.
When it comes to food pairings, Brunello di Montalcino’s robust structure and layered flavours excel alongside Tuscan classics. Consider serving it with bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-cooked wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or aged pecorino Toscano. The wine’s natural acidity and tannins also complement rich meat stews, roasted lamb, or mushroom-based dishes, while its savoury undertones make it an excellent partner to truffled dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow it to fully express its bouquet and soften the tannins. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This wine is promising now but will undoubtedly reward additional cellaring, evolving gracefully over the next decade or more.
