Col Orcia’s Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is a classical expression of Sangiovese Grosso, produced under the prestigious DOCG rules of Brunello di Montalcino. From carefully selected estate fruit, this wine is vinified using traditional methods: fermentation in stainless steel, followed by extensive ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels—often for at least two years before further bottle maturation. The 2015 vintage stands out for its poise and depth, revealing aromas of ripe cherry, dried herbs, leather, and balsamic nuances, supported by a firm yet polished tannic structure. The palate is both elegant and powerful, with flavours of dark fruit, tobacco, and subtle sweet spice, leading to a harmonious, lingering finish.
Brunello di Montalcino hails from the rolling hills surrounding the medieval town of Montalcino in southern Tuscany. This area benefits from a predominantly Mediterranean climate, with significant diurnal temperature variation and the moderating influence of sea breezes, allowing for slow, even ripening of the Sangiovese grapes. The soils are diverse, with a mix of clay, limestone, and galestro (marl), which contributes to the complexity and longevity of the wines. Montalcino’s wine culture boasts a storied heritage, with Brunello enjoying international acclaim as one of Italy’s most age-worthy reds since the late 19th century.
Owing to its structure and complexity, this Brunello pairs beautifully with rich dishes such as Tuscan wild boar ragù, bistecca alla Fiorentina, or braised beef with herbs. Its natural acidity makes it a wonderful match for aged Pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano cheeses. For a regional experience, serve it alongside pappardelle al cinghiale.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its aromas to unfurl. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C. This Brunello also has excellent ageing potential if you wish to lay it down for future enjoyment.
