Amarone della Valpolicella is one of the great wines of Italy, renowned for its opulent style and remarkable depth. This 2022 vintage from Ca Dei Nani expresses the signature character of the region. Amarone is made using the appassimento method, in which carefully selected grapes – traditionally including varieties such as Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara – are dried for several months after harvest. This process intensifies the sugars and flavours, resulting in a dark, richly textured wine. While each estate varies, you can expect a deep ruby colour and an expressive bouquet combining ripe dark cherries, dried fruits like figs and sultanas, along with hints of cocoa, sweet spices, and sometimes a touch of earthy or leathery undertones. The palate is often full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a warming finish, balanced by a remarkable freshness for such an intense wine.
The Valpolicella region is nestled in the hills just north-west of Verona, in the heart of the Veneto. The area benefits from a mildly continental climate, tempered by Lake Garda and the cool breezes from the elevated foothills. Its soils, a mixture of limestone and clay with occasional basalt influences, offer excellent drainage and contribute to the complexity and longevity of the wines. Amarone has been produced in this region since at least the mid-20th century, though its origins reach further back to local traditions of drying grapes for rich, ageworthy wines. The dedication to meticulous vineyard work and careful selection is a hallmark of authentic Amarone.
Food pairings for Amarone are best matched to its richness and intensity. Ideal companions include braised beef or venison in a red wine sauce, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, and aged hard cheeses such as Monte Veronese or Parmigiano Reggiano. For a regional touch, try it with “pastissada de caval” (braised horse meat stew), a local Veronese speciality. The wine’s depth also harmonises beautifully with mushroom risotto or strong, savoury dishes with truffles.
For optimal appreciation, decant the wine for at least one or two hours before serving to let its bouquet open fully. Serve at 18-20°C, and enjoy in generous glasses to enhance its aromatic complexity. Amarone evolves beautifully over time; though already enjoyable young, it will reward a few years in your cellar with even more nuance and elegance.
