Maso Maroni’s 2014 Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is a classic embodiment of this iconic Venetian red. Crafted predominantly from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes, this wine stands out for its unique production method: the appassimento process, where grapes are dried post-harvest to intensify flavours and concentration. The 2014 vintage demonstrates both the luscious depth and remarkable structure typical of Amarone, littered with notes of ripe black cherry, plum, dried fig, and nuances of cocoa, tobacco, and earthy spice. Extended maturation in oak barrels has further softened its tannins while lending subtle hints of vanilla and leather, resulting in a complex, full-bodied and velvety wine.
Originating from the heart of the Valpolicella region in Veneto, Amarone benefits from a temperate climate tempered by breezes from Lake Garda and protection by the Lessini Mountains. The region’s soils, a mix of clay, limestone, and volcanic rock, offer excellent drainage and impart a characteristic minerality to the wines. Valpolicella is steeped in history, producing wines since Roman times, and Amarone, with its tradition of grape drying, exemplifies the ingenuity of the region’s winemakers.
Given its opulent and rich style, this Amarone is an excellent companion for robust dishes. Classic pairings include braised beef cheeks, slow-cooked lamb shank, or a wild boar ragù served over fresh pappardelle, allowing the wine’s depth to echo the intensity of the flavours. It also shines alongside matured cheeses like Monte Veronese or Parmigiano-Reggiano, and for a regional touch, try it with Risotto all’Amarone, a local dish where the wine stars both in the food and the glass.
For best enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow it to open up fully. Serve at 18-20°C, in large glasses to capture its complex bouquet. This Amarone is already rewarding now but has the structure to age gracefully for several more years.
