Viniou Reviews

Tedeschi’s Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Cuvée Montolmi Riserva 2017 is an exceptional representation of the venerable Amarone style, produced using a blend of classic local grape varieties such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and potentially a small percentage of other native grapes. This cuvée highlights the artistry of the appassimento technique, where carefully selected grapes are semi-dried over several months before fermentation, concentrating sugars and aromas. The 2017 vintage brought a warm, balanced season, yielding wines of rich structure and expressive fruit. In the glass, the Montolmi Riserva exudes intense aromas of ripe dark cherries, dried figs, cocoa, tobacco, and a hint of sweet spice, underpinned by velvety tannins and a lingering, complex finish that showcases both the depth and elegance of Tedeschi’s craft.

The Valpolicella region, nestled in the rolling hills of the Veneto near Verona, benefits from a unique microclimate shaped by the proximity of Lake Garda and the protective Lessini Mountains. These conditions provide a relatively mild climate with considerable temperature swings between day and night, ideal for slow grape ripening and flavour development. The soils, composed of limestone, clay and occasional volcanic deposits, further contribute to the region’s ability to produce wines of great finesse and longevity. Valpolicella has a long winemaking tradition, and Amarone, since receiving DOCG status, has cemented itself as one of Italy’s most prestigious and individual reds, renowned for its concentration, power and ageing potential.

The voluptuous, structured nature of this Amarone makes it a superb match for hearty dishes. Traditionally, it pairs beautifully with braised beef cheek, game such as venison, or a slow-cooked lamb shank rich in herbs and savoury juices. Local Veronese favourites like risotto all’Amarone or aged Monte Veronese cheese accentuate its character. Its nuanced dried fruit and spice notes also work surprisingly well alongside dark chocolate desserts.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at 18-19°C, ideally after an hour of decanting to allow its complex bouquet to unfurl. This Riserva has serious ageing potential but can also be relished now for those who prefer Amarone’s plush, youthful vitality.
