Le Salette's Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2018, Cuvée Pergole Vece, is an exceptional red wine born from the heart of Italy's Veneto region. This Amarone is crafted from a traditional blend of native grapes, typically Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara. The 2018 vintage benefited from carefully selected bunches, which were air-dried for several months in the appassimento tradition, resulting in a wine of remarkable concentration and depth. Vinified dry, it is known for its opulent structure, intensely rich aromas of sun-dried cherries, plums and figs, alongside notes of dark chocolate, sweet spices, and a subtle earthy undertone. Ageing in oak barrels further adds complexity, bringing hints of tobacco, leather, and vanilla to the long, persistent finish.
The Valpolicella region, set in the foothills north of Verona, enjoys a mild continental climate with good ventilation, aided by its proximity to Lake Garda. The rolling hills are composed of varied soils, from limestone and clay to volcanic basalt, which endow the wines with their characteristic finesse and minerality. With a winemaking history dating back to Roman times, the area is celebrated for its unique use of the appassimento method, which distinguishes Amarone from all other Italian reds by imparting depth, power, and remarkable age-worthiness.
Amarone’s robust and velvety nature makes it a fantastic companion to rich cuisine. It excels with braised meats like ossobuco or slow-cooked short ribs, and marries beautifully with wild game, such as venison or duck in a dark fruit sauce. Regional pairings could include risotto all’Amarone or aged Monte Veronese cheese, both of which harmonise with the wine's intense fruit and savoury undertones. Bitter dark chocolate desserts also offer a surprising but delightful contrast.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this Amarone della Valpolicella at 17-18°C, after allowing it to breathe for at least an hour. Using large Bordeaux-style glasses enhances its aromatic complexity. This wine is ideal for contemplation and special meals and promises further development with careful cellaring.
