Castello di Ama’s 2016 Chianti Classico DOCG “San Lorenzo” is a distinguished red wine hailing from the heart of Tuscany. Primarily crafted from Sangiovese, with smaller additions of Merlot and Malvasia Nera, this wine draws its character from the estate’s prime vineyards surrounding the historic hamlet of Ama. The 2016 vintage was notable for its balance and long ripening period, which resulted in expressive fruit balanced by vibrant acidity and refined tannins. In the cellar, traditional vinification in stainless steel is followed by ageing in oak barriques, lending both structure and subtle spice to the blend. This meticulous approach brings forward notes of wild cherry, violet, sweet spices, and a lingering minerality, all underpinned by a silky, integrated palate.
The Chianti Classico region enjoys a unique microclimate shaped by its elevation and proximity to the Apennine Mountains. The soils here are predominantly galestro (a schist-based marl) and alberese (limestone), imparting mineral depth and finesse to the wines. The area’s growing conditions—warm sunny days and cool nights—favour optimal ripening while retaining excellent acidity, which is key for Sangiovese’s signature vibrancy. Steeped in history, Chianti Classico has been a high-regarded wine region since mediaeval times, with boundaries first officially marked in 1716, making it one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine areas.
This elegant and complex Chianti Classico excels alongside Tuscan classics such as bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak), wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic. The wine’s acidity and moderate tannins also lend themselves beautifully to tomato-based dishes, mushroom risotto, grilled vegetables, and mature Pecorino Toscano.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine an hour before serving to allow its aromas to unfurl and tannins to soften. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C, which will ensure its layered bouquet and graceful structure shine through.
