Château Reszla’s 2008 Cuvée Eszencia is an extraordinary example of the famed sweet wines of Tokaj, Hungary. While the precise blend of grape varieties is not specified, it is likely that classic Tokaj grapes such as Furmint, Hárslevelű, and possibly Muscat played a role, given the traditional styles of the region. ‘Eszencia’ refers to the most concentrated essence of botrytised grapes, collected drop by drop from the berries and renowned for its staggering richness, intensity and natural sweetness. Vinification for such wines is painstakingly slow, often taking years for the thick, syrupy must to ferment and mature, creating a nectar-like wine of immense depth and longevity. The 2008 vintage benefitted from a long, warm autumn essential for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) development, further enhancing aromatic complexity and sweetness.
Tokaj, nestled in north-east Hungary, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a winemaking legacy stretching back over four centuries. The region’s volcanic soils, humid autumn climate thanks to nearby rivers Bodrog and Tisza, and gentle south-facing slopes create a microclimate ideal for fostering noble rot. These conditions concentrate the sugars and flavours in each grape, allowing Tokaj’s sweet wines to achieve legendary status amongst connoisseurs. The unique terroir imparts remarkable minerality and freshness that balance the wines' natural sweetness, making them both opulent and elegant.
Pairing a Cuvée Eszencia is a rare and special experience. Its luscious sweetness and high acidity work beautifully alongside rich, pungent blue cheeses like Roquefort or Gorgonzola, but also elevate classic desserts such as apricot tart, crème brûlée, or Hungarian Dobos torte. For a regional experience, try it with foie gras terrine—a traditional pairing that highlights both decadence and acid lift.
To best appreciate this exceptional wine, serve it lightly chilled, around 10-12°C. Due to its intensity and sweetness, small measures suffice, allowing you to savour its extraordinary bouquet and lingering finish over time. This is a wine for contemplation and celebration, destined to create lasting memories.
