Mas d'Alezon’s Cuvée Montfalette 2023 comes from the Faugères AOC, nestled in the heart of the Languedoc region of southern France. This red wine blend typically includes Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, embodying the aromatic complexity and intensity for which Faugères is known. The 2023 vintage benefits from a particularly favourable growing season, fostering ripe, healthy grapes while still retaining freshness. The vineyards of Mas d'Alezon are perched on schistous soils at higher altitudes, which contribute minerality and lift to the wine. Vinification is carried out with care to preserve the purity of fruit, often involving gentle extraction and limited use of oak, resulting in a vibrant yet refined wine with notes of wild berry, garrigue herbs, spicy undertones and a touch of graphite typical of the terroir.
Set in the rugged hills north of Béziers, Faugères is one of the Languedoc’s most prestigious appellations, celebrated for its unique foundation of ancient schist soils. The Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers balanced by cooling breezes from the nearby mountains, while diurnal temperature swings protect natural acidity and guarantee slow, even grape ripening. Faugères has a long winemaking history, but it is in recent decades that its promise for characterful, terroir-driven reds such as Mas d'Alezon’s Cuvée Montfalette has come to the fore.
This expressive red wine pairs beautifully with robust Mediterranean cuisine. Traditional Languedoc dishes such as cassoulet, roast lamb with thyme, or grilled duck breast highlight its savoury character. Vegetarian options like ratatouille or grilled aubergines would also work well, as would mature hard cheeses.
For optimal enjoyment, decanting the wine for 1 to 2 hours is recommended to allow the aromatic bouquet to open fully. Serve at 16-18°C to appreciate its freshness, depth and subtle spice, either now for its youthful vibrancy or keep it in the cellar for a few more years for added complexity.
