Viniou Reviews

Jean-Baptiste Adam's 2021 Cuvée Kaefferkopf Riesling Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a quintessential expression of Alsace's profound winemaking heritage. Crafted entirely from Riesling grapes sourced from venerable old vines planted in the esteemed Kaefferkopf Grand Cru vineyard, this wine embodies both precision and complexity. The 2021 vintage in Alsace was marked by a cooler growing season, resulting in wines that are particularly vibrant and well-balanced, with pronounced acidity and delicate aromatics. The old vines lend additional depth, concentration and minerality to the wine, while vinification techniques likely emphasise clarity of fruit and terroir expression, producing a dry, crystalline profile that is at once refined and powerful.

The Kaefferkopf vineyard, granted Grand Cru status in 2007, is situated in the heart of Alsace near Ammerschwihr. Its soils are an intricate mosaic of granite, limestone, and sandstone, providing perfect conditions for Riesling to flourish, yielding wines with both minerality and aromatic finesse. The region itself enjoys a semi-continental climate, sheltered by the Vosges mountains, which results in dry, sunny growing conditions ideal for perfumed and structured white wines. Alsace's winegrowing tradition stretches back generations, with a unique Germanic and French influence that is particularly evident in both grape selection and stylistic choices.

This Riesling's vibrant acidity, saline minerality, and citrus-driven palate make it a superb partner for a variety of dishes. Traditional Alsatian fare such as choucroute garnie, or a delicate fish dish like trout with almonds, will harmonise beautifully with the wine’s character. Equally, its intensity makes it an excellent match for seafood, notably oysters, scallops, or sushi, and it can cut through the richness of creamy cheeses such as Munster or goat’s cheese.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this Riesling well chilled, at a temperature between 8 and 10°C. Allow the wine a little time in the glass to open up, so its subtle floral notes and mineral backbone can fully reveal themselves. This Grand Cru will reward both immediate drinking and careful cellaring over several years.
