Viniou Reviews

Domaine La Janasse's 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape in magnum format is a testament to the outstanding traditions of southern Rhône winemaking. The style, true to the appellation, typically offers a deep, complex bouquet, combining notes of dark berries, cherry, a hint of liquorice, and an underlying warmth of spices, garrigue and earthy undertones developed through several years of careful ageing. Although the precise blend varies each vintage and estate, Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are often composed of Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and sometimes a medley of other permitted grape varieties making up the balance, contributing to both power and elegance in the finished wine. The 2012 vintage is known for its balance, concentration and ripe tannic structure, benefitting from bottle age to reveal greater harmony and tertiary complexity.

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is among the most revered of the southern Rhône Valley, its vineyards stretching out over a fairly warm, Mediterranean-influenced climate. The terroir is unique, characterised by the region’s famous galets roulés (large, rounded stones) which store heat and contribute to the rich ripeness of the grapes, as well as red clay and sandy soils that lend further nuance. This area has a long viticultural history, with winemaking traditions dating back several centuries, and is closely linked to the Avignon papacy, after which the village is named.

For food pairings, the robust yet refined style of this wine marries beautifully with hearty dishes such as slow-roasted lamb, duck breast with black olive tapenade, or a traditional Provençal daube. Local delights such as ratatouille or wild mushroom cassoulet would also highlight the wine’s herbal and subtly earthy nuances. The magnum format is ideal for festive gatherings, where the wine’s structure and expressiveness can shine alongside flavourful, convivial cuisine.

To best appreciate its maturity and complexity, decant the wine for one to two hours before serving. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C for optimal expression of aromas and mouthfeel.
