Viniou Reviews

L’Oratoire des Papes 2022 is a red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the Rhône Valley’s most revered appellations. The cuvée is a classic representation of the southern Rhône style, typically composed of Grenache as its backbone, accompanied by Syrah, Mourvèdre and occasionally a touch of Cinsault or other regional varieties. The 2022 vintage stands out for its generous ripeness, due to a warm and sunny growing season, producing berries of superb concentration. The grapes are harvested from old vines rooted in the famed Châteauneuf galets roulés – smooth, heat-retaining pebbles that lend both power and elegance to the finished wine. Vinification is traditional, with partial destemming and gentle extraction to highlight fruit purity and maintain the nuanced spiciness that defines the appellation.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies in the southern reaches of the Rhône Valley and enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and the influential mistral wind which ensures healthy, ripe grapes. The terroir here is legendary: layers of large rounded stones atop clay and limestone soils contribute to both heat retention and water regulation, enabling the vines to thrive even in the warmest years. The history of the region dates back to the papal residency in Avignon during the 14th century, an era which solidified the area’s reputation for producing wines of regal character and complexity.

This robust yet graceful wine is ideally matched with richly flavoured dishes. Traditional pairings from the region include daube provençale, a slow-cooked beef stew with olives and herbs, or a classic ratatouille. Lamb roasted with garlic and rosemary, or pigeon with wild mushrooms would also elevate the wine’s earthy undertones. Those seeking a simple yet effective match could enjoy it with mature cheeses such as aged Comté or a hearty charcuterie platter.

For optimal enjoyment, serve L’Oratoire des Papes 2022 at 16-18°C. Decant for an hour if possible to allow the bouquet of ripe blackberries, garrigue herbs, and spice to unfold fully. This wine will continue to evolve over the next 8–12 years, rewarding those with patience for cellaring.
