Domaine Raspail-Ay 2022 from the Gigondas AOC is a robust red wine, epitomising the power and finesse of its appellation. Produced in the Southern Rhône Valley, this wine predominantly features Grenache, typically complemented by smaller proportions of Syrah and Mourvèdre, although exact blend ratios can vary each vintage according to the domaine’s philosophy. The 2022 vintage benefited from a warm, sun-drenched season, promoting full ripeness of the grapes while retaining a balance thanks to the unique terroir. Vinification at Raspail-Ay maintains traditional methods, including fermentation in concrete vats and ageing, often in large old oak casks (foudres), allowing the wine's character to express itself naturally without excessive oak influence.
Gigondas is nestled on the rugged slopes at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, with vineyards ranging from 100 to 400 metres in altitude. The region’s soils are composed mainly of limestone, clay, and rocky scree, contributing both strength and freshness to the wines. The Mediterranean climate ensures hot, dry summers and mild winters, though the cooling Mistral wind helps keep the vines healthy and intensifies the aromatic profile of the grapes. Historically, Gigondas has long lived in the shadow of neighbouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but today it enjoys a well-deserved reputation for producing structured, ageworthy reds with remarkable depth.
The bold structure and spicy, dark fruit profile of Domaine Raspail-Ay makes it an excellent accompaniment to richly flavoured dishes. Classic southern French fare such as lamb roasted with Provençal herbs, daube de boeuf (beef stew with olives and orange zest), or wild mushroom ragout will highlight the wine’s earthy undertones. Locally, it also partners beautifully with game meats or hearty cassoulet, while the wine’s natural peppery spice allows it to pair wonderfully with dishes featuring black olives, tapenade, or Mediterranean vegetables.
For optimal enjoyment, serve the wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for at least an hour prior to tasting will allow the youthful tannins to soften and the intricate bouquet of dark cherry, black pepper, and garrigue herbs to unfold gracefully. This vintage promises much for cellaring over the next 8 to 10 years.
