The 2022 Adžic Cuvée Graševina Hrnjevac from the Kutjevo appellation, Slavonia, is an excellent expression of Graševina, the prized white grape variety that dominates Croatian vineyards. Often known outside Croatia as Welschriesling, Graševina here delivers a vibrant, youthful wine with delicate floral and green apple aromas, layered with subtle citrus and hints of freshly cut hay. The wine is vinified dry, highlighting the variety’s hallmark freshness, crisp acidity, and pure fruit expression. The 2022 vintage, generally considered favourable in the region, bestows the wine with lively energy and a clean, mineral finish.
Slavonia, located in eastern Croatia, is one of the country's historic and important wine regions. Its gently rolling hills, most notably around Kutjevo, feature soils composed predominantly of loess and clay, providing excellent drainage and optimal conditions for white varieties like Graševina. The continental climate, with warm summers and relatively cold winters, encourages both ripeness and finesse while preserving the essential acidity that makes Slavonian whites so refreshing. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times, with the Kutjevo cellar itself founded in the 13th century, imparting great depth and tradition to every bottle.
This Graševina’s crisp, aromatic profile lends itself beautifully to light, delicate dishes. Classic pairings include freshwater fish such as carp or trout, which are staples of Slavonian cuisine. The wine also complements cold starters like smoked ham or fresh cheeses, and would shine with seafood salads or simple vegetable risottos. For a true regional experience, try it alongside Šaran na rašljama (carp on the spit) or gently spiced poultry dishes. Its subtle minerality and clean palate make it a versatile partner for any fresh, summery fare.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine well-chilled at 8-10°C. This will preserve its lively aromatics while accentuating the refreshing structure. Decanting is not necessary; simply open and pour to savour the true spirit of Slavonia in the glass.
