Very solid Sauvignon. Nice on the nose (typical Sauvignon). On the palate well rounded (still fresh but firm character), nice mineral finish. Perfect for light pasta or fish.

Viniou Reviews

The Tomaz Cuvée Nostro Sauvignon Blanc 2023 hails from the Buje area in Istria, Croatia, reflecting both the innovative spirit and deep-rooted viticultural heritage of the region. Crafted exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc, this wine offers a vibrant and expressive aromatic profile characteristic of the grape. Expect an appealing bouquet of freshly cut grass, elderflower and citrus zest, complemented by delicate mineral notes that hint at the limestone-rich soils of Istria. The 2023 vintage, marked by favourable weather and a gentle ripening season, preserves both the varietal’s bright acidity and its aromatic finesse. While the vinification details remain undisclosed, the style points to careful temperature control and possibly a brief ageing on lees, preserving purity and adding subtle texture.

Istria, nestled in Croatia’s north-west, borders the Adriatic Sea and benefits from a unique mix of Mediterranean and continental climates. Hot, sun-drenched days followed by cool nights ensure the wines retain freshness while developing complexity. The soils here are predominantly flysch, a combination of marl and limestone, which imparts a distinctive minerality and underscores the vibrancy in Sauvignon Blancs like this one. With a winemaking culture dating back to Roman times, Istria has reinvented itself in recent decades, turning indigenous and international grape varieties into elegant, modern expressions.

With its zesty acidity and aromatic lift, this Sauvignon Blanc is a perfect match for fresh seafood such as Adriatic scampi or grilled white fish drizzled with lemon and olive oil. It would also complement goat’s cheese salad, asparagus risotto or traditional Istrian fuži pasta with a light herb sauce. For a more local pairing, try it alongside a platter of marinated anchovies or sheep’s cheese.

Serve this wine well-chilled, ideally between 8-10°C, in classic white wine glasses to highlight its crisp aromatics. Allow the bottle a few minutes to open up, enhancing the intensity of its bouquet and its lively, elegant palate. This Sauvignon Blanc promises immediate enjoyment and will shine brightest in its youth.
