The Emiliana VIGNO Vignadores de Carignan 2020 is an exemplary Chilean red, highlighting the potential of old-vine Carignan from the Maule Valley. Made predominantly from Carignan, this organic cuvée draws on the heritage of vines planted in the aftermath of the 1939 earthquake, many of which still thrive on their original rootstocks. The 2020 vintage benefited from a warm and dry season, allowing for optimal ripeness while retaining the grape's characteristic freshness. The wine is vinified with respect for its origins, often using minimal intervention and natural fermentation processes to preserve both purity and authenticity. Aging, typically in used oak barrels, lends subtle structure without overshadowing the vibrant fruit profile.
The Maule Valley boasts a remarkable winegrowing history, being one of Chile’s oldest regions, and is renowned especially for its resilient old vines. The valley enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm days and cooler nights, ideal for maintaining acidity in robust reds. Soils are predominantly a blend of granitic and alluvial compositions, providing excellent drainage and encouraging deep root penetration, which translates into concentrated flavours and complexity in the finished wines. The region’s relative isolation has helped safeguard ancient plantings, making it the cradle of Chile’s Carignan revival.
For food pairings, the Emiliana VIGNO Carignan’s vibrant acidity, structured tannins, and layers of red and black fruit shine alongside hearty, flavourful dishes. It pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled beef, and rich tomato-based stews. Regional Chilean cuisine such as pastel de choclo (corn pie with minced meat) or empanadas filled with spiced beef are excellent companions, highlighting both the wine’s rustic charm and its bright, juicy profile.
Serve this wine at a temperature of 16-18°C to best appreciate its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Decanting for an hour is recommended to allow the developed fruit and subtle earthy notes to emerge. This Carignan is enjoyable now but will benefit further from two to five years of cellaring for those seeking additional complexity.
