Viniou Reviews

d'Arenberg's The Footbolt is a celebrated red blend from the 2021 vintage hailing from the renowned McLaren Vale in South Australia. Predominantly crafted from Shiraz, this cuvée reflects both tradition and innovation, showcasing deep, vibrant colour and an expressive aromatic profile. The grapes are sourced from old vines planted on sandy loam and clay soils over limestone, leading to wines of remarkable concentration. Traditional fermentation with some foot treading and basket pressing preserves natural fruit purity while imparting gentle tannin structure. The wine typically displays a medley of ripe blackberries, plums, and hints of pepper, complemented by nuances of liquorice, cocoa, and subtle oak, making for a well-rounded and characterful finish.

McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s oldest and most admired wine regions, famed for its Mediterranean climate characterised by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The proximity to the cooling influences of the Gulf St Vincent helps to retain freshness and elegance in the wines. The soils are notably diverse, ranging from red-brown earths to sand and limestone, fostering complexity and depth in the finished product. With a viticultural history dating back to the 1830s, McLaren Vale has built an international reputation on premium red wines, particularly Shiraz and blends thereof.

With its bold personality and balanced tannins, The Footbolt is a versatile wine at the table. It pairs beautifully with robust meat dishes, such as slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary or grilled ribeye steak. For a regional touch, try it alongside peppered kangaroo fillet or a hearty Australian beef pie. The savoury spice and generosity of fruit also work well with barbecued vegetables or rich mushroom dishes.

To enjoy this wine at its best, decant it for at least an hour before serving to allow its aromas and flavours to fully express themselves. Serve at a temperature between 16-18°C to highlight both the freshness and the depth of fruit. This cuvée is enjoyable now for its vibrancy but can also reward several years of careful cellaring.
