Shiraz, also known as Syrah in other regions, is a highly esteemed grape variety renowned for producing full-bodied, rich red wines. Characterised by a deep, inky colour, Shiraz wines typically offer a compelling aromatic profile featuring notes of dark fruits such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry, underpinned by pepper, spice, and hints of liquorice, chocolate, and sometimes smoky or earthy undertones.
The principal regions for Shiraz production include Australia—particularly the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Hunter Valley—where the grape thrives in warm climates, resulting in robust wines with intense fruit flavours. Notable plantings also exist in South Africa and in some regions of the United Kingdom, but Australia remains most synonymous with Shiraz.
Shiraz is produced in a variety of styles, ranging from bold, fruit-forward single varietal wines to elegant blends. It can also be made in sparkling or fortified styles. Ageing in oak enhances its complexity, contributing vanilla and cedar notes.
Recommended food pairings include grilled or roasted red meats, barbequed dishes, hard cheeses, and rich stews. The wine’s bold character and firm tannins are particularly well-suited to complementing strongly flavoured, savoury dishes.
