Areni Noir is an ancient and distinguished red grape variety, native to Armenia and central to the country's winemaking heritage. Renowned for its aromatic complexity, Areni Noir wines typically display vibrant notes of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate, complemented by subtle floral hints, spicy undertones, and a delicate mineral character. On the palate, these wines are characterised by medium body, refreshing acidity, finely-grained tannins, and a persistent, elegant finish.
The principal viticultural region for Areni Noir is the Vayots Dzor province, where high-altitude vineyards and volcanic soils provide ideal growing conditions. This region’s extreme temperature variations further enhance the grape’s depth of flavour and aromatic intensity.
Areni Noir is most often crafted as a varietal red wine, ranging from youthful, fruit-forward expressions to more complex, oak-matured styles with added structure and nuance. Increasingly, it is also used in premium blends and occasionally in sparkling rosé wines.
Recommended food pairings include roasted lamb, grilled aubergines, spiced poultry dishes, and hard cheeses. Its vibrant acidity and subtle spice make it an excellent match for Levantine or Mediterranean cuisine, elevating both traditional and modern dishes alike.
