Viniou Reviews

Zorah Karasì 2019 is an exceptional Armenian red wine, produced in the storied Vayots Dzor region. Crafted predominantly from the indigenous Areni grape variety, this cuvée stands as a testament to Armenia’s ancient wine culture and modern dedication to quality. The Karasì name refers to the traditional Armenian clay amphorae ("karas") used for vinification, lending both historical authenticity and nuanced character to the wine. The 2019 vintage displays a deep ruby hue, with an expressive aromatic profile mingling ripe red and black berries, delicate spice, and subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, it balances vibrant acidity with fine, well-integrated tannins and a core of juicy fruit, underpinned by a distinctive mineral tension derived from the unique terroir.

Vayots Dzor, nestled in the highlands of southern Armenia, is a region with a winemaking heritage that stretches back millennia, widely acknowledged as one of the oldest viticultural areas in the world. The continental climate brings hot, dry summers and cold winters, with significant diurnal temperature variation that helps grapes retain freshness and complexity. The soils are predominantly volcanic and rocky, imbuing the wines with marked minerality and a distinctive sense of place. Winemakers in this region often work with ancient vines, some over a century old, which result in lower yields but highly concentrated fruit.

Zorah Karasì 2019’s vibrant yet structured character makes it an excellent partner for a range of dishes. Traditional Armenian cuisine such as khorovats (barbecued meat skewers), lamb with dried fruits, or spicy basturma pair beautifully, while Mediterranean-inspired grilled vegetables or aubergine-based dishes also complement its savoury fruit. For a more international approach, consider roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, or mushroom risotto.

To fully appreciate the nuanced aromas and textured palate of this wine, it is best served at 16-18°C. Decanting for about an hour before serving allows the wine to bloom, revealing its elegant complexity and heritage-driven personality.
