Trincadeira, also known as Tinta Amarela, is a distinguished red grape variety indigenous to Portugal. Renowned for its vibrant aromatic profile, Trincadeira typically displays intense notes of blackberries, ripe plums, and blackcurrants, elegantly layered with nuances of dried herbs, floral undertones, and a signature spicy character often reminiscent of pepper and clove. On the palate, the wines deliver medium to full body, lively acidity, firm yet polished tannins, and an enduring finish. Hints of liquorice and earthy complexity may develop with age.
The principal regions cultivating Trincadeira are the Alentejo—where it thrives in warm, dry conditions—and the Douro Valley, as well as the Dão and Setúbal Peninsula. In these regions, the grape is celebrated both as a single varietal and as a key component in blends, notably in classic Portuguese reds and in Port blends.
Trincadeira wines excel in a range of styles from youthful, fruit-driven reds to more structured, age-worthy offerings. The vibrant acidity and spicy undertones make Trincadeira an excellent partner for robust cuisine such as grilled lamb, Iberian pork, game dishes, and mature cheeses, as well as dishes featuring Mediterranean spices and rich tomato-based sauces.
