The grape variety Alicante Bouschet

Alicante Bouschet is a unique teinturier grape variety celebrated for its deeply pigmented flesh and skins, imparting an intense, inky hue to the wines it produces. Aromatically, it exhibits notes of ripe blackberries, plums, and dark cherries, often complemented by subtle hints of spice, earth, and occasionally a touch of chocolate or liquorice. On the palate, Alicante Bouschet offers a robust structure, with generous tannins and well-balanced acidity; its flavour profile is dominated by rich dark fruits supported by a savoury, sometimes rustic edge.

This grape thrives primarily in southern Portugal, where it is a cornerstone of Alentejo blends, and is also widely grown in Spain (notably La Mancha) and the south of France, especially Languedoc. Typical wine styles range from dense, tannic reds destined for ageing to approachable, youthful offerings brimming with fruit-forward vibrancy.

Alicante Bouschet pairs excellently with hearty fare; its bold character complements roasted lamb, game meats such as venison, rich stews, and mature hard cheeses.
