Bold Vine’s 2019 Old Vine Zinfandel embodies the unique character of Lodi AVA, a prominent Californian wine region renowned for its exceptional old vine Zin. This wine is crafted from ancient Zinfandel vines, some exceeding 50 years of age, which lends great concentration and complexity to the blend. The 2019 vintage was marked by a balanced growing season in California, allowing the grapes to ripen fully whilst retaining a vibrant acidity. Vinified traditionally to preserve its varietal character, the wine offers a deep ruby colour and a robust bouquet featuring ripe blackberries, black cherries, peppercorn, and subtle vanilla notes from careful oak ageing. On the palate, you can expect rich, jammy fruit, hints of mocha and licorice, underpinned by supple tannins and a lingering, spicy finish.
Lodi, situated east of San Francisco Bay, benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cooling evening breezes that promote an extended ripening period, essential for developing Zinfandel’s signature fruit intensity. The sandy loam soils of Lodi provide excellent drainage and are especially hospitable to old vine plantings, which produce lower yields of exceptionally concentrated berries. Historically, Lodi has long been associated with Zinfandel, and many Californian family estates are dedicated to preserving the legacy of these exquisite, mature vineyards. This sense of place is unmistakably present in Bold Vine’s 2019 cuvée.
For food pairing, such a generous, fruit-driven Zinfandel calls for hearty and flavourful dishes. It shines alongside barbecued or grilled meats – think marinated ribs, spicy sausages, or smoky brisket. It also complements tomato-based pasta dishes, slow-cooked stews, or, for a regional touch, Californian tri-tip steak with salsa. Bold cheeses such as aged cheddar or gouda marry well with its richness.
When serving, decanting for thirty minutes enhances its aromatics and smooths the tannins. The optimal tasting temperature is 16-18°C, which allows the wine’s fruit and spice character to fully unfold in the glass. Enjoy now, or cellar for a further 3-5 years for more nuanced development.
