Zinfandel is a distinctive grape variety renowned for producing bold and expressive wines. Its aromatic profile is marked by generous notes of blackberries, raspberries, and cherries, often intertwined with hints of black pepper, spice, and, in riper expressions, sweet tobacco and jammy candied fruit. On the palate, Zinfandel typically offers a rich, fruit-forward character, medium to full body, moderate tannins, and lively acidity, culminating in a plush, warming finish. While closely associated with California—particularly regions such as Sonoma County, Napa Valley, and the Sierra Foothills—Zinfandel’s Old World counterpart, Primitivo, is found in southern Italy, especially Puglia.
Zinfandel is remarkably versatile, yielding a range of wine styles. Classic red Zinfandels are full-bodied and robust, while “Old Vine” expressions showcase greater concentration and complexity. The grape is also used for lighter rosé wines, known as White Zinfandel, characterised by their refreshing, off-dry palate.
When it comes to food pairings, Zinfandel’s vibrant fruit and spicy undertones make it an excellent companion to grilled meats, barbecued dishes, spicy sausages, and hearty tomato-based stews. It also pairs well with aged cheeses and rich vegetarian fare, offering versatility across a range of cuisines.
