Viniou Reviews

Baumgartner Weingut’s Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc Chürzi 2023 from the Aargau AOC is an intriguing Swiss white wine, offering a fresh interpretation of the classic Sauvignon Blanc profile. The 2023 vintage stands out for its youthful vibrancy and clarity, benefiting from a relatively cool growing season that has retained the grape’s hallmark acidity and aromatic intensity. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, this cuvée preserves the variety’s primary fruit characteristics, with notes of citrus, green apple, fresh herbs, and a subtle white floral undertone. The terroir of the Chürzi parcel imparts fine mineral nuances and a pleasingly crisp finish to the wine.

Situated in the heart of the Swiss plateau, Argovie (Aargau) is a lesser-known yet quietly dynamic wine region. The vineyards lie along the banks of the Aare river, benefiting from a continental climate influenced by cool Alpine breezes, which extend the ripening period and help the grapes maintain lovely acidity and freshness. The soils here are varied, with a predominance of loess, clay, and limestone, lending this Sauvignon Blanc both aromatic clarity and a delicate mineral backbone. Wine production in Aargau dates back to Roman times, but in recent decades the region has elevated its reputation through a focus on quality and environmentally conscious viticulture.

This Sauvignon Blanc is a fantastic match for dishes showcasing fresh herbs and light, vibrant flavours. Classic pairings include goat’s cheese salad, asparagus risotto or grilled fish with lemon and dill. For a regional touch, try it with Swiss lake fish such as Egli (perch) or char, simply prepared to highlight the wine’s citrus and mineral qualities. Thanks to its zesty profile, it also complements Asian-inspired cuisine, particularly sushi or Thai salads with lime and coriander.

For the best tasting experience, serve this wine well chilled at 8-10°C. Enjoy it in its youth to appreciate its aromatic brightness and lively palate, ideally within two to three years of the vintage. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing it a few minutes in the glass will reveal its full aromatic range.
