Viniou Reviews

Lopez de Heredia’s Viña Gravonia Blanco 2016 is a compelling white Rioja, renowned for its artisanal approach and ageing capacity. Traditionally, this cuvée is produced mainly from Viura—a grape variety well suited to Rioja’s white wine traditions—but as with all heritage producers, the exact blend may subtly vary with each vintage. The 2016 bottling carries the signature of extended ageing, both in oak and bottle, which is a hallmark of Lopez de Heredia’s meticulous vinification. Expect aromas and flavours that move beyond primary fruit into layers of dried citrus, chamomile, beeswax and toasted nuts, developing a subtle oxidative complexity with an elegant, lingering finish.

The Rioja region, situated in northern Spain, enjoys a continental climate tempered by Atlantic influences, with warm summers and cold winters. The Viña Gravonia vineyards are located in the Alto Rioja subzone, close to Haro, where the soils are predominantly alluvial and calcareous, favouring freshness and tension in the wines. Historically, Rioja has been a reference point for both red and white wines, with white Rioja enjoying a storied legacy thanks to producers like Lopez de Heredia, who have championed long-ageing and a traditional, oxidative style.

Viña Gravonia Blanco is extremely food friendly, thriving alongside a diversity of dishes. Its structure, acidity and mature profile make it an excellent partner for roast poultry, grilled hake, or aged Manchego cheese. Classic local pairings could include bacalao a la riojana (salt cod with peppers and tomato), or white asparagus with a drizzle of olive oil. The wine’s subtle nuttiness and texture also work beautifully with dishes featuring saffron, almonds or roasted vegetables.

To enjoy this white Rioja at its best, serve it cool but not too cold, ideally between 10 and 12°C. Give the wine a little time in the glass to breathe; its layers will reveal themselves as it gently warms, offering an expressive window into both the landscape and tradition of Rioja.
