Viniou Reviews

The Gerón Viñedos del Carmen Rioja 2023, Cuvée Tinto Joven, is a vibrant expression of youthful Rioja reds. This wine, crafted from a classic blend that likely emphasises Tempranillo, perhaps with touches of Garnacha, embodies purity and freshness, as is typical of the “Joven”—unaged—style. The 2023 vintage promises immediacy of fruit: expect a lively nose of red cherries, wild strawberries, and subtle floral notes, with just a hint of spice. Vinification for this style is generally straightforward—fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the grape’s primary flavours, with little or no oak influence. The result is a supple, energetic palate with well-integrated tannins and a refreshing, moreish finish.

La Rioja is Spain’s most renowned wine region, nestled in the north of the country, defined by its unique combination of climates: Atlantic freshness, Mediterranean warmth, and continental sharpness. The region’s soils—a mosaic of clay, limestone, and iron-rich elements—lend Rioja reds their characteristic balance of ripe fruit, vibrant acidity, and elegant structure. Historical influences from Bordeaux can still be traced in local winemaking techniques, and the area’s rich tapestry of old vineyards bestows great complexity even on its youthful wines.

For food pairings, this Cuvée Tinto Joven is wonderfully versatile. Its exuberant fruit and moderate body make it ideal for classic tapas, such as chorizo al vino or patatas bravas, as well as grilled lamb cutlets, roast chicken, or a rich tortilla Española. It will also complement charcuterie and semi-cured cheeses—Manchego in particular. If you enjoy international cuisine, try it with a simple Margherita pizza or herby grilled vegetables.

For serving, chill the wine lightly to best accentuate its freshness; a temperature of 14-16°C is ideal. Decanting is unnecessary—uncork and pour straight away to savour its youthful, expressive character. This Rioja Joven is best enjoyed within two to three years to appreciate its primary fruit and vivacity.
