Loved it! That's the style of wine I love. Extra silky tannins, well balanced, a notch on the acidity side. Smell of leather, wood box and linden. Taste of dried herbs, earth and old wines.

Viniou Reviews

The 2004 Urbina Rioja is a remarkable Spanish red wine that captures the essence of La Rioja's illustrious wine tradition. Composed primarily of Tempranillo grapes, this wine showcases the classic characteristics of the varietal with impressive finesse. The 2004 vintage boasts a harmonious balance between fruit and ageing potential, allowing the wine to evolve beautifully over time. Grown in the renowned Rioja region, the vineyards benefit from a terroir that combines clay-limestone soils, which contribute to the wine's depth and structure. The winemaking process is meticulous, with ageing in oak barrels that imparts a subtle complexity and depth to the wine, accentuating its intricate layers of flavour.

La Rioja, recognized globally as one of Spain's premier wine regions, benefits from a continental climate with Mediterranean influences. This climate ensures hot summers and mild winters, bringing about optimal grape ripening conditions. The rich history of winemaking in the area dates back to Roman times, and today Rioja is synonymous with quality Spanish reds. The diverse soil composition, which includes limestone, clay, and sandstone, adds unique characteristics to the wines produced here, particularly in the case of the Tempranillo-dominated blends.

For perfect food pairings with the 2004 Urbina Rioja, consider dishes that enhance its depth and complexity. Grilled lamb with rosemary, a classic pairing with Rioja wines, will complement the wine's tannins and fruit flavours. Additionally, regional Spanish dishes such as roasted red peppers stuffed with a savoury filling or traditional chorizo stews can harmonize beautifully with this wine.

When it comes to tasting, ensure the Urbina 2004 Rioja is served between 16-18°C to fully appreciate its aroma and flavour profile. Decanting for at least an hour before serving will also help to open up the wine, revealing its nuanced character and enhancing your tasting experience.
