Viniou Reviews

R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Bosconia 2012 is a striking Rioja red, steeped in tradition and typicity. The cuvée is a meticulous blend dominated by Tempranillo, complemented by Garnacha, with small proportions of Mazuelo and Graciano adding complexity and aromatic lift. The 2012 vintage benefited from optimal conditions, yielding wines with freshness, balanced structure, and refined tannins. Viña Bosconia is crafted following time-honoured methods: fermentation takes place in large oak vats, then the wine is aged for several years in American oak barrels, followed by further ageing in bottle. This results in superb integration of flavours: notes of ripe red cherry, subtle leather, sweet spices, dried herbs, tobacco, and a hint of vanilla, all underscored by earthy minerality and a remarkable finesse.

The Rioja region, and particularly the sub-zone surrounding Haro where López de Heredia resides, boasts a unique combination of clay-limestone soils and an Atlantic-influenced climate. Marked by warm days and cool nights, the conditions are ideal for slow, balanced grape ripening. Rioja’s winemaking heritage stretches back centuries, with a reputation for producing some of Spain’s most age-worthy and elegant reds. The region’s classic ageing regime results in wines that combine fruit purity with gentle maturation notes and tannic structure, making them both complex and approachable.

For food and wine pairing, Viña Bosconia 2012 shines alongside traditional dishes from northern Spain, such as lamb chops grilled over vine cuttings (chuletillas al sarmiento), slow-braised oxtail, or rustic stews with Rioja chorizo. Its vibrant acidity and elegant tannins also make it an excellent partner for roast duck, hard cheeses like Manchego, or wild mushroom risotto. More modern pairings might include grilled vegetables or stuffed peppers.

To fully appreciate the delicate bouquet and palate, serve this Rioja red at 16-18°C, allowing it to breathe for at least an hour before drinking. A large, tulip-shaped glass will help reveal its complex aromatics and graceful evolution in the glass.
