Alta Alella Cuvée GX 2023 is an enticing red wine from the celebrated Alella DO in Catalonia, Spain. The 2023 vintage reflects a modern approach to Mediterranean winemaking, blending native and international grape varieties—often with Grenache (Garnatxa) as a core component, complemented by supporting varieties to enhance complexity and structure. The grapes are carefully selected from organic vineyards perched on the region’s unique sauló soils, a form of sandy granite that imparts remarkable minerality and finesse. Vinification typically emphasises freshness and the pure expression of fruit, with temperature-controlled fermentation and limited oak influence, preserving the aromatic vibrancy of the blend.
Alella is one of Spain’s smallest and oldest wine denominations, nestled on the north-eastern coast near Barcelona. The region benefits from a warm, temperate Mediterranean climate, moderated by cooling sea breezes from the Mediterranean Sea, which help to preserve natural acidity and freshness. The distinctive sauló soils offer excellent drainage, encouraging deep-rooted vines and low yields, resulting in concentrated, aromatic wines. Alella’s winemaking traditions date back to Roman times, but today the region is renowned for innovative, high-quality bottlings that marry tradition with modernity.
Alta Alella Cuvée GX 2023’s bright fruit character and supple tannins make it a versatile table companion. It pairs beautifully with Catalan specialities such as escalivada (chargrilled vegetables), botifarra sausages, or roast lamb with rosemary and garlic. Its freshness also complements Mediterranean tapas, grilled poultry, or rosemary-scented pork loin. The wine’s balance and moderate body make it equally enjoyable with hard Spanish cheeses such as Manchego, or dishes featuring roasted aubergine and tomato.
For ideal enjoyment, serve this wine slightly cool—between 15 and 17°C. Decanting for half an hour will allow it to unfold its aromatic profile and soften the youthful tannins. This is a wine to savour with convivial company, Mediterranean fare, and a sense of discovery.
