Alvaro Palacios’ Les Terrasses 2016 is a distinguished red from the Priorat DO, one of Spain’s most revered appellations. This cuvée is composed predominantly of Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), often complemented by traces of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, depending on the vintage. The 2016 vintage stands out for its balance and refinement, shaped by an excellent growing season. The grapes are sourced from steep, ancient vineyards rooted in the region’s unique licorella soils—slate and schist that impart distinct minerality and freshness to the wine. After careful selection, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and the wine is aged for several months, partly in French oak barrels, lending subtle notes of spice and structure without overshadowing the varietal character.
Priorat, nestled in the heart of Catalonia, boasts a dramatic landscape of rugged hills and terraced vines. The Mediterranean climate is tempered by cool nights and the mistral wind, contributing to steady ripening and clear-cut acidity. The region’s viticultural heritage traces back to the 12th century, with a modern renaissance in the late 20th century spearheaded by winemakers such as Alvaro Palacios. The essence of Priorat lies in its ancient, low-yielding vines and black slate soils, which combine to create deeply coloured, intensely flavoured reds with both concentration and elegance.
Les Terrasses is well suited to rich and flavourful cuisine. It pairs superbly with lamb cutlets roasted with Mediterranean herbs, grilled beef with olive tapenade, or even traditional Catalan dishes like botifarra (pork sausage) with white beans. Mushroom risotto or roasted aubergine with romesco sauce would also highlight its earthy undertones. For cheese pairing, opt for aged Manchego or Mahón.
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and supple structure, decant Les Terrasses 2016 for at least an hour before serving. Ideal tasting temperature is 16-18°C, which will showcase its layered nose of dark fruits, garrigue, graphite, and underlying spice. This wine is already expressive, but will benefit from a few more years in the cellar should you wish to explore its deeper evolution.
