Cariñena, also known as Carignan in France, is a red grape variety renowned for its bold character and versatility. Originating from the Aragón region in Spain, it displays an intense aromatic profile rich in black fruit notes such as blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by subtle nuances of liquorice, herbs and earthy undertones. On the palate, Cariñena typically offers robust tannins, vibrant acidity and a full-bodied structure, often revealing flavours of dark berries, spices, savoury minerals and sometimes a pleasant hint of smokiness.
The principal wine regions for Cariñena include its native DO Cariñena in Spain, as well as Priorat and Montsant in Catalonia. Beyond Spain, significant plantings are found in France’s Languedoc-Roussillon and in some New World regions.
Typical styles range from powerful, youthful varietal wines to complex blends with Garnacha, Syrah or Mourvèdre, crafted in both oaked and unoaked formats. Cariñena-based wines age well, developing greater depth and subtlety over time.
Recommended food pairings include hearty dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, beef stew, grilled sausages and mature cheeses. The grape's fresh acidity and pronounced structure make it an excellent match for rich, flavourful cuisine.
