The Pintia 2019 from Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia is an expressive red wine hailing from the Toro DO in Castille and León, Spain. Predominantly made from the local Tinta de Toro grape—an ancient clone of Tempranillo—this wine embodies both power and finesse. On the nose, it delivers an intense bouquet of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and black cherry, with underlying notes of violet, licorice, and hints of cocoa and toast from a period of ageing in a blend of French and American oak barrels. The palate is bold, structured and concentrated, featuring firm tannins balanced by an impressive freshness, leading to a lingering, spicy finish. The 2019 vintage was marked by favourable growing conditions, producing wines of remarkable depth and complexity.
Toro, the region where – Pintia is produced, sits on the high plains of north-western Spain along the Duero River. The area’s history as a wine-producing zone stretches back to Roman times, but in recent decades it has garnered acclaim for its robust reds. The continental climate provides hot, dry summers and cold winters, subjecting the vineyards to significant diurnal temperature shifts, which are key to developing wines of intensity and balance. The soils are composed primarily of sand, clay, and pebbles, offering excellent drainage and contributing to the concentration and ripeness that are hallmarks of Toro wines.
To pair with the Pintia 2019, consider robust and flavourful dishes that can stand up to the wine’s depth and structure. Classic Spanish fare such as roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, or local specialties like “lechazo asado” (roast suckling lamb) and aged Manchego cheese, will highlight the wine’s earthy and spicy undertones. For a more international approach, slow-cooked beef stews or grilled ribeye steak would also prove excellent companions.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour before serving to allow its complex aromas to unfold. Serve at around 16-18°C to enhance its aromatic profile and soften the tannins while maintaining its freshness. This wine promises excellent ageing potential but is already compelling should you choose to enjoy it now.
