Pintia 2020 from Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia is a vibrant Spanish red wine, crafted predominantly from the Tinta de Toro grape, a local variant of Tempranillo. The 2020 vintage reflects a youthful yet complex character, with deeply concentrated dark fruit flavours, hints of liquorice, cocoa, and subtle earthy notes. The wine undergoes fermentation in both wood and stainless steel vats to maintain freshness and purity of fruit, before aging in a combination of French and American oak, imparting structure, rounded tannins, and spicy nuances. Pintia consistently aims for richness and finesse, striking a beautiful balance between power and elegance.
The Toro DO region in Castille and León boasts a long viticultural history dating back to Roman times. The area is renowned for its continental climate – hot, dry summers and cold winters – creating conditions ideal for grape concentration and depth. The Duero River, running through the area, moderates the extreme temperatures, helping to preserve acidity and aromatic complexity in the wines. The soils are predominantly sandy with gravel and clay subsoils, facilitating excellent drainage and giving rise to intense, age-worthy reds famed for their robust character.
Pairing Pintia 2020 with food is a delight. Its bold profile suits rich, flavoursome dishes such as slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled aged beef, or Iberico pork. Traditional Castilian fare like lechazo asado (roast suckling lamb) or Morcillo guisado (braised ox cheek) are particularly harmonious, as the wine's power matches the depth of these regional specialities. It would also complement mature Manchego cheese or earthy wild mushroom dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, decant Pintia 2020 one to two hours prior to serving to help the wine open up and soften its tannins. Serve at 16-18°C to allow the full expression of its fruit, spice, and structure. This wine will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade, so cellaring for a few more years is also an excellent option.
