Avaniel 2021 from Ribera del Duero is a red wine hailing from one of Spain’s most celebrated regions. This cuvée is crafted primarily, if not entirely, from Tempranillo – known locally as Tinto Fino. The vintage 2021 brings with it the freshness and vibrant fruit character often associated with younger Ribera del Duero wines. In the glass, you can expect a vivid ruby colour with pronounced aromas of black cherry, red plum and subtle hints of sweet spice, while the palate is likely to present ripe berry fruit, supple tannins and a lively acidity, showing both approachability and authenticity. The vinification tends to emphasise fruit purity over extended oak influence, highlighting the natural qualities of the grape and terroir.

Ribera del Duero is renowned for its high plateau vineyards, situated along the banks of the Duero river. The region experiences hot summers and cold winters, with significant diurnal temperature shifts that help the grapes retain ample freshness and build complexity. The soils are a mosaic of clay, limestone, and pebbles, lending depth and structure to the wines. With a history dating back to Roman times, Ribera del Duero has firmly established itself as a benchmark for bold Spanish reds, often standing shoulder to shoulder with neighbouring Rioja.

When it comes to food pairings, Avaniel 2021’s lively fruit and structured yet supple palate make it an excellent companion for grilled lamb cutlets, roasted pork, charcuterie or spicy chorizo. Traditional Castilian fare – like hearty legume stews or slow-cooked morcilla – will echo the wine’s rustic charm.
