Flor de Pingus 2018 is an impressive red wine from Dominio Pingus, one of the most prestigious estates in Ribera del Duero, located in the Castille and León region of Spain. Crafted primarily from old-vine Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo), this cuvée showcases the incredible potential of the Ribera terroir. The grapes are hand-harvested from selected parcels and vinified with meticulous care, employing gentle extraction and fermentation in stainless steel, followed by aging in high-quality French oak barrels. The 2018 vintage offers remarkable concentration and finesse, presenting deep aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries, interwoven with notes of violets, sweet spices, graphite, and a subtle minerality. The palate is voluptuous yet structured, displaying a balance between ripe fruit, well-integrated oak, and a persistent, fresh finish.
Ribera del Duero is a celebrated region in northern Spain, known for its dramatic climate and unique soils. The vineyards sit on the high plateau of the Duero River, with altitudes ranging from 750 to 900 metres. The continental climate is marked by hot, dry summers and cold winters, with notable diurnal temperature shifts that help develop complexity and preserve acidity in the grapes. The soils here are a mosaic of clay, limestone, and gravel, contributing to deep-rooted vines and wines of great intensity and longevity. Ribera del Duero has a long winemaking history, but in recent decades it has gained international acclaim, particularly for its ageworthy and powerful red wines.
For food pairings, Flor de Pingus 2018’s depth and elegance make it a superb match for robust dishes such as grilled lamb chops, roast suckling pig (cochinillo asado), or a classic Castilian morcilla (blood sausage). It also pairs beautifully with hard aged cheeses like Manchego, or beef tenderloin accompanied by wild mushrooms. This wine’s structure lets it stand up to richly flavoured game and slow-cooked meats, while its finesse ensures an excellent dining experience even with more refined preparations.
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture, serve Flor de Pingus 2018 at around 16-18°C. Decanting for at least one to two hours prior to serving will help the wine express its full aromatic potential and soften its youthful tannins. This vintage has excellent aging potential, but it can also be enjoyed now with proper aeration.
