Goyo Garcia Viadero’s 2021 Ribera del Duero is a compelling expression of this famed Spanish appellation, crafted from old-vine Tempranillo, often blended with a modest proportion of Garnacha or Albillo, all sourced from high-altitude, organically farmed plots. The 2021 vintage benefited from a generous growing season, balancing ripeness with freshness thanks to significant diurnal temperature swings. True to the bodega’s philosophy, vinification is minimal intervention: fermentation takes place in stainless steel or concrete, using indigenous yeasts, with élevage in neutral oak. The result is a wine of vivid purity, bright ruby in colour, with aromas of wild cherry, bramble, violets and subtle herbal undertones. On the palate, fine tannins and balanced acidity frame succulent red and black fruit, accented by hints of graphite and dried spices, with remarkable length and finesse for the appellation.
Ribera del Duero, stretching along the Duero River in Castilla y León, lies on a high plateau at altitudes exceeding 800 metres. The climate here is strictly continental: hot summers and sharply cold winters, with dramatic swings between day and night temperatures. This combination slows grape ripening, preserving acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity. Soils comprise layers of limestone, clay, and gravel, lending backbone and minerality to the wines. The region is steeped in history, dating back to pre-Roman times, but entered its modern renaissance in the 1980s, quickly establishing itself among Spain’s preeminent wine regions, famed for robust, ageworthy reds.
This wine’s elegance and structure make it a versatile companion at table. Traditional Spanish fare such as lechazo asado (roast suckling lamb), morcilla (blood sausage) or a rich cocido castellano (Castilian stew) are natural choices. It also pairs beautifully with grilled beef, mushroom dishes, game birds, or aged sheep’s milk cheeses like Manchego or Zamorano.
For a full appreciation of its aromatic complexity and fine texture, serve this Ribera del Duero at a temperature of 16-18°C. Decanting for about an hour prior to serving will help unlock its nuanced character, especially in these youthful stages.
