Viniou Reviews

Viña Sastre Crianza 2019 from Ribera del Duero is a prime example of the region’s expressive red wines. Crafted primarily from Tempranillo, locally known as Tinto Fino, this wine showcases the varietal’s illustrious character. The 2019 vintage benefited from an excellent growing season, resulting in ripe, healthy grapes. The aging process typical of a Crianza involves at least 12 months in oak barrels, imparting subtle notes of vanilla, spice and toast to a foundation of ripe dark fruit, such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry. On the palate, expect a harmonious balance of lively acidity and well-structured tannins, with a lingering, elegant finish that reflects both the grape variety and careful vinification.

Situated on the northern plateau of Spain, Ribera del Duero is one of the country’s most acclaimed wine regions. The area experiences a continental climate with hot summers, cold winters, and stark diurnal temperature shifts that enable grapes to ripen fully while maintaining freshness and acidity. The vineyards are often planted on rocky, well-drained soils rich in limestone and clay, contributing to the concentration, complexity, and mineral undertones found in the wines. Ribera del Duero’s winemaking legacy dates back over a thousand years, and in recent decades, the region has risen to international acclaim for its robust, age-worthy reds.

This Crianza is wonderfully versatile at the table but shows its best alongside hearty, flavourful dishes. Local specialities such as roast lamb (lechazo asado), grilled steaks, or morcilla (Spanish blood sausage) harmonise beautifully with its depth and structure. Mature cheeses like Manchego, cured meats, and rich stews also make excellent companions. The wine’s fruit-forward profile, nuanced oak, and firm tannins will complement savoury flavours and enhance the dining experience.

For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine at 16-18°C. Decanting for an hour before serving will allow the aromas and tannins to soften, revealing the wine’s full complexity and elegance.
