Envínate’s 2018 Cuvée Migan hails from the Valle de la Orotava DO, nestled on the volcanic island of Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands. Crafted predominantly from Listán Negro, a native red grape variety, this wine is notable for its old vines—planted in braided cordons, some over a century old—growing on rich, mineral-laden volcanic soils. The 2018 vintage expresses exceptional balance, marked by fresh acidity and subtle tannins owing to both the cooling Atlantic influences and sensitive, low-intervention vinification. Whole bunch fermentation and ageing in old oak barrels underscore the wine’s delicate wild fruit character, nuanced by earthy spice and a hint of saline minerality evocative of the ocean breeze.
The Valle de la Orotava is a region steeped in viticultural history, with vines first introduced in the 15th century. The zone benefits from unique climatic conditions, shaped by the surrounding Atlantic which tempers the island heat and provides cooling mists, allowing for a long, even ripening period. The mineral-rich soils, primarily volcanic ash and rock, impart a distinctive vibrancy and savoury edge to the wines. The combination of ancient vines, unique terroir and thoughtful winemaking set these wines apart, producing reds of finesse and compelling character, never overpowering yet always unmistakably evocative of their origin.
This Cuvée Migan, with its lively aromatics of red currant, wild strawberry, pepper and subtle earthy undertones, pairs beautifully with both traditional Canarian cuisine and lighter fare. Try it alongside "ropa vieja" (shredded beef stew with chickpeas), grilled tuna with mojo verde, or a selection of local cheeses such as Queso Majorero. Its freshness and bright acidity will also shine with charcuterie, roast poultry or Mediterranean-style tapas featuring roasted peppers and aubergines.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for 30 minutes and serve slightly chilled, between 14-16°C, to bring out its aromatic complexity and silky texture. This will highlight the wine’s vibrant fruit, underlying savoury notes and refreshing salinity, offering a true taste of Tenerife’s volcanic soul.
