Viniou Reviews

Bodegas Lunares 2018 from the Sierras de Malaga DO is a striking Spanish red that beautifully illustrates the unique character of Andalusian wines. Crafted from a blend of local and international varieties typical of the region, the 2018 vintage showcases both the power and elegance achievable at these altitudes. Vines thrive on rocky, limestone-laden slopes between 600 and 900 metres, with the diurnal temperature variation ensuring gradual ripening and the development of fresh aromas alongside ripe, dark fruits. The winemakers of Lunares take particular care with gentle extraction during vinification, preserving vibrant acidity and supple tannins, resulting in a wine with generous fruit, a hint of Mediterranean garrigue, and a touch of mineral finesse that lingers on the finish.

The Sierras de Malaga DO is set amongst the rugged mountains inland from the Costa del Sol. Historically, the region was famous for sweet, fortified wines, but a new wave of producers has turned to dry reds and whites, capitalising on the altitude, sloped terrains, and an enviable Mediterranean climate tempered by mountain breezes. The soils here offer a mix of limestone, schist, and clay, giving a distinctive minerality and freshness. The story of Sierras de Malaga is one of revival and modernity, where traditional Andalusian grape-growing wisdom meets innovative winemaking.

To highlight the wine’s expressive fruit and refreshing acidity, pair it with tapas classics like jamón ibérico, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, or aubergine with honey—a traditional Andalusian dish. The wine’s supple texture and persistent finish also complement richer plates such as slow-roasted pork shoulder, game birds, or a hearty ratatouille. For a local touch, serve alongside chorizo al vino or aged Payoyo cheese.

Open Bodegas Lunares 2018 about half an hour before serving and enjoy it slightly cool, ideally between 15-17°C, to allow its layered aromatics and graceful structure to shine. This temperature brings out the best balance of fruit, freshness, and subtle spice.
