Viniou Reviews

Kumeu River's Coddington Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 is a fine expression of New Zealand's growing reputation for world-class Chardonnay. This single-vineyard wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes sourced from the Coddington site, one of Kumeu's most renowned plots. The 2022 vintage benefited from a long, warm growing season with balanced ripening, resulting in fruit of exceptional purity and complexity. Traditional winemaking is at the heart of this wine’s character: whole bunch pressing, fermentation in French oak barrels, and extended lees contact create a Chardonnay with both richness and precision. On the nose, it offers subtle stone fruit and citrus notes, complemented by delicate toasty oak and a hint of wet stone. The palate is silky, with layered flavours of ripe peach, lemon zest, and brioche, supported by well-integrated acidity and a mineral-driven finish.

The Auckland region, while less internationally recognised than Marlborough, holds an historic place in New Zealand’s winemaking. The maritime climate delivers relatively mild summers and cool nights, ideal for preserving freshness and aromatic complexity in whites. Volcanic and clay soils lend a structural backbone and mineral edge to the wines. Kumeu, in particular, has built a quiet reputation for excellence, with viticulture dating back to Dalmatian settlers in the early 20th century. The Coddington vineyard, with its gentle slopes and north-facing aspect, consistently produces concentrated, balanced fruit.

This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Classic matches include roast chicken, grilled seafood such as scallops or lobster, or a creamy mushroom risotto. For a regional touch, try it alongside New Zealand green-lipped mussels steamed with lemon and herbs, or white fish in a beurre blanc sauce. The wine’s freshness and underlying richness also complement dishes like poultry in light cream sauces or pasta with spring vegetables.

For optimal enjoyment, chill the Coddington Chardonnay to 10-12°C. This temperature reveals both its vibrant fruit and its subtle, creamy texture; decanting is not essential but can help open the bouquet if enjoyed young.
