Corte Rugolin’s 2018 Cuvée Crosara de le Strie hails from the heart of the Valpolicella region in Veneto, northern Italy. This cuvée is crafted from a blend of traditional local grapes such as Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella, which are the backbone of classic Valpolicella reds. The 2018 vintage experienced favourable conditions, marked by a balanced ripening season resulting in fruit-driven wines with a lovely freshness. Vinification at Corte Rugolin combines careful temperature control and gentle extraction techniques to preserve the vibrant aromas and natural elegance of the grapes. The wine, in its youth, shows an attractive ruby hue with intense aromas of ripe cherry, wild berries, and a hint of spice, complemented by a touch of floral notes that are typical of the appellation.
The Valpolicella region is nestled between Lake Garda and the foothills of the Lessini Mountains, benefitting from a mild, temperate climate that encourages gradual grape maturity. The soils are a mix of limestone, clay, and marl, imparting a vital minerality and structure to the finished wines. Viticulture here dates back to Roman times and the area is renowned for its winemaking heritage, balancing tradition with innovation to produce wines of character and finesse.
This Valpolicella pairs beautifully with classic dishes from the Veneto region, such as risotto all’Amarone, bigoli in salsa (traditional thick pasta in a savoury sauce), and grilled meats like lamb chops or pork with rosemary. Its fresh acidity and bright fruit cleanse the palate, making it an excellent accompaniment to hard cheeses like Asiago or even a simple platter of sliced prosciutto.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this wine slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C. This allows its delicate aromas and lively structure to fully express themselves, ensuring a harmonious and memorable tasting experience. Decanting for half an hour before serving can enhance its aromatic complexity, especially as the wine continues to evolve over the next few years.
