Mezzacorona’s Teroldego Rotaliano DOC 2022 is an excellent showcase of the indigenous Teroldego grape, often referred to as the “prince” of Trentino reds. The 2022 vintage benefits from a relatively mild year, offering freshness and vibrant fruit. The grapes are sourced from the Rotaliano plain, a renowned terroir composed of alluvial soils rich in pebbles and minerals, which impart finesse and distinctive minerality to the wine. Vinification follows traditional methods, with controlled fermentation temperatures and gentle extraction to preserve the grape’s deep colour, evocative aromas, and silky tannins. Expect a deeply coloured wine, with aromas of wild berries, plums, violet, and subtle earthy notes, followed by a palate that is both juicy and structured, with a pleasant freshness on the finish.
The Trentino-Alto Adige region, nestled at the foothills of the Dolomites in northern Italy, is defined by its dramatic alpine landscape. The unique microclimate is shaped by warm days, cool nights, and the brisk Ora del Garda wind, ensuring a slow, optimal ripening of the grapes and preserving acidity. The Rotaliano plain, in particular, has been devoted to Teroldego since at least the 15th century, and is celebrated for producing some of Italy’s most characterful, food-friendly reds. The combination of glacial soils, river pebbles, and sedimentary deposits creates an environment where Teroldego thrives, developing complexity and depth.
This wine, with its dynamic fruit profile and lively acidity, pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Traditional local pairings include speck, tyrolean cured meats, and canederli, the famous bread dumplings of the region. It’s also wonderful alongside roast pork, game bird, or a rich mushroom risotto. For a more contemporary match, try it with a grilled lamb chop or aubergine parmigiana—Teroldego’s freshness will lift the flavours of both.
For optimal enjoyment, serve this Teroldego Rotaliano slightly cool, around 16-18°C. Decanting for 30 minutes can help open up its bouquet and soft, youthful tannins. This is a wine to savour with hearty food and good company.
