The 2019 Tenuta Tascante Contrada Sciaranuova from the Etna DOC is an outstanding example of the unique volcanic wines being produced on the slopes of Sicily’s most famous volcano. This red wine is crafted predominantly from Nerello Mascalese, a native grape famed for its elegant structure, fine tannins, and vibrant acidity. The Sciaranuova vineyard, nestled at approximately 750 metres above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, benefits from significant diurnal temperature shifts, which enhance the wine’s aromatic complexity and freshness. The volcanic soils, rich in minerals and well-drained, contribute finesse, savoury minerality, and a distinct graphite note to the wine. The 2019 vintage was marked by a mild spring and a relatively cool, balanced summer, allowing for a prolonged ripening of the grapes. Vinification is careful and respectful, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by ageing in large oak casks, preserving the wine’s pure fruit and subtle earthiness.
Etna is one of Italy’s most dynamic and historic viticultural regions, with a tradition of winemaking that stretches back millennia. The vineyards cling to steep terraced slopes of black volcanic ash and lava rock, where old, gnarled vines—often cultivated in the traditional alberello method—produce grapes of remarkable complexity. The region’s altitude, volcanic soils, and proximity to the sea create a unique microclimate that tempers the often blazing Sicilian sun, enabling vibrant, age-worthy reds. The winemaking renaissance on Etna in the last two decades has restored ancient vineyards and cemented the area’s reputation for producing wines that combine Burgundian elegance with Mediterranean intensity.
This wine’s lifted aromas of sour cherry, pomegranate and wild herbs, complemented by delicate floral and mineral notes, make it an ideal partner for grilled lamb chops with rosemary, Sicilian aubergine caponata, or savoury mushroom risotto. Traditional local pairings also include slow-cooked pork with fennel and pasta alla Norma. The wine’s tannins and freshness can stand up to robust flavours, while its finesse won’t overpower more delicate, earthy dishes.
For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for about an hour to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfurl. Serve at 16-18°C to highlight its vibrant fruit, refined tannins, and savoury minerality. This wine is drinking beautifully now but will also reward several years of cellaring.
